Before I came to New Zealand fifteen years ago, I had been an orthopaedic surgeon in Seoul, South Korea. As an immigrant doctor, my Korean qualifications were not recognised here, so as well as mastering English for everyday communication, I had to learn for - and pass - the requisite medical examinations before the Medical Council would grant me registration. The exams which I had to pass necessarily included written and oral skills in English, an accurate and extensive medical English vocabulary, and the ability to communicate fluently with patients. Without Mary's teaching, I could not have passed those exams. She was energetic, kind, and very thorough in her preparation and mastery of the medical terminology needed. Her tuition was crucial in my preparation and to my consequent success. Comments from Jack Wan, BE. (Consulting Engineer.) It's hard to forget the really fruitful lessons we had with Mary. I know for sure I have improved all my English skills. Now I'm studying for my Masters' degree while working, so all that extra tuition is indispensable. Too many things about English that we were not properly taught at school, or have forgotten, come to be greatly needed when working professionally. In our case, it is civil engineering. Mary shaped her teaching to focus on our needs. Her lessons became a further stage in sharpening my mastery of English. Even for a highly fluent non-native English speaker, I was surprised at what I didn't know. |
